Vanezza, I had a very similar experience as a 2LT on Bde staff of a MI BDE . My first formation I watched dumbfounded as all the officers walked away from the formation, some right back into the building for work. Wasn’t PT a group activity in the Army? The CC came up to me and my peer, and asked us if we had a PT plan. I pulled an index card out of my pocket and prepared to brief him, but he interrupted me and didn’t even look at it. “You look prepared, LT. Get after it”. So I did. (The downside there was I became know by name to the BDE CDR because I would indeed workout alone all the time I ended up racing him a few times on the straight away of the run path, not knowing that – in Army culture – it’s shocking for a 2LT to challenge a COL like that. He, thankfully, that it was hilarious and a wonderful experience)
It is absolutely easy to take advantage of that independence to the point of not executing. I’ve found that a community is imperative for me to stay consistent, and – for me – that’s always taken the form of group classes and the people in them. As a LT, it was the instructor who would run up to me in the DFAC, punch me in the shoulder and ask me where I was that morning because I sure wasn’t in her class. In my present job, it’s my friends in my weekly cycling class who run me through the wringer for not showing up, even if I had a a different workout / schedule that day Or simply attended a different class that week. I think finding what motivates and supports you, like a fitness plan, instructor, or community, is what’s key to sustaining a PT habit. Thanks for contributing what works for you as ideas for others!
