Personal discipline is one of the few things each soldier whether your enlisted or an officer has complete control over. Everyone may define personal discipline differently but for the most part is consists of being in the right place at the right time in the correct uniform. Being in a leadership role personal discipline is a requirement. To be able to lead by example you must set the standard and inspire your soldiers to meet that standard as well as hold them accountable for their actions.

For or the second part what does enforcing discipline mean? I think you said it just right, enforcing discipline is not always a smoke session, counseling, or telling them is going to be hard if they do not shape up. However, there is a time and a place for all of these and sometimes that is what it takes.

My my advice to other young leaders if you are the one enforcing discipline remember soldiers are not just a name on a shred sheet they have personal lives. Try to find out what is the rout of the cause and show them that you care about them and their well-being.
