@george.l.gurrola – you’re so, so right about not only delivering “bad news” (whether it be training, taskings, or otherwise).   I had a HQ CC who did that, just always delivering the news of something that was late or hot, basically that I’d have to 180 at least a handful of folks.  It became a conditioned response after awhile. Anyway, after he switched out, the first day of the next guy’s command, new commander walks in to the shop and I’m automatically bracing myself, like “great, here it comes, here we go again.” And he’s talking with the Soldiers and drinking coffee, and here I am waiting for the shoe to drop. Eventually he pops his head into my office (where I was – I admit – sulking). Okay, deep breath – “what can I help you with?” His response? “Nothing, I just came in to check on the shop.”   My jaw hit the floor. No Friday afternoon task? No last minute leave form needing the Boss’s signature even though he’d already left for an end of day meeting? No sweet talking to get an AAM signed for Monday? Literally … nothing? Later I told him that was the single best thing he could have done on his first day in command. Healing relations with the staff went a long, long way towards a more functional and trusting company.
