Agreed you have to make the best of it. I’m still struggling with how/why the numbers go the way they go. For instance, from West Point Class of ’07, 60 were branched Field Artillery. For ’08, 100. For ’09? 140. This led to a conversation with the officer submitting my battalion’s USR, revealing we had 26 Lieutenants for 11 MTOE slots. So, every lieutenant could have an assistant and the other 4 could…? Yet you weren’t eligible for much in the way of re-branching until you had more time in the Army and/or KD. This also meant I saw a number of Captains pinning Major during or immediately following command. Anyway, I could’ve loved the Artillery, as it’s absolutely how I’d fight a war, and the history is great. Overcrowding of officers got me re-branching as fast as I could figure out how, and I couldn’t be happier.
