Rose – what a great post! I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about disciplined initiative and being a jack of all trades. As an MI LT, one is expected to provide timely intelligence and demonstrate competence in their primary duties. However, junior officers also get “selected” to execute other responsibilities. I was lucky enough to plan and execute events such as the BN Dining In, among other events. Reflecting on my time as a LT, it was effort and having a positive attitude that helped.
Similar to @lavertym‘s comments, its not necessarily a counter-argument but would like to add to your comment about “over-communicating”, especially since you are reflecting about being a staff officer. As a staff officer, I’ve learned that over communication should be the rule especially as a 2LT. However, as a Captain, I’ve learned that “over communication”, to some supervisors, can be perceived as a sign that one cannot operate with autonomy. As lavertym mentions, its about the “supervisors leadership style.” At the end of the day it is about anticipating requirements and gauging your supervisor’s communication style.
Amazing post!
