I leave work when my tasks are done and conditions are set for the following day. As a platoon leader, I would ensure to be the last Soldier home, even if my tasks were done. If the guys were still working in the motor pool, and my office work was done, I would go down and monitor their work. As a staff officer, I would observe maintenance if our vehicles were being worked on. That being said, I would not wait for junior officers to finish their work on staff. I learned to leave when I was done, since there would be nights when I would be working late.

I bring everything home from work as to ensure nothing disappears and to keep my work space looking clean.

On a side note, I found that working out is best done at 0500, before PT, to beat the post rush. Also, it frees up your afternoon to maximize time with your significant other. You are not going to set any personal records after a work day, if you try to go to the gym.

Work life balance is an important ideal, but one needs to be mentally prepared for the surprise duty and or last minute suspense. Ultimately, Soldiers will be watching you for your response, positive or negative, to whatever comes your way. Put on a good face and get it done.
