My Infantry NG company was conducting a company air assault at Ft. Hood. One of my cadets (acting as a rifleman) took a picture of himself sitting on the UH60 and used Snapchat to send it to his friends. Throughout the ground movement he sent photos and left his geo-location turned on. And, since the OPFOR was made up of HHC cadets, they (and the BC standing with them) were able to track his PLT’s movement within 10m. As a result, our company got waxed.
This was a failure at many levels, but it was a prime example of an OPSEC violation getting Soldiers killed. Our great plan and undetected movement was thwarted by one guy with a phone in his pocket.
This cadet, as a piece of his corrective training, now manages our unit social media accounts.
