For some (many?) officers, the amount of time you get with your senior rater is limited.  I’ve seen my O-6 commanders get more and more interested in SM and they do spend a measurable amount of time dealing with it in some manner.  So I found that using a company or BN-level Facebook and/or Instagram post gets you/your unit/your Soldiers more exposure to your SR.  Make friends with PAO (or whomever manages your SR’s social media) and invite them to your events.  If they can’t come to your event, simply let them know when you’ve posted on your social media account and ask them to share your post.

From a family perspective, it’s traditionally been a struggle to stay in touch with Soldiers’ families that don’t live near your post/camp/station, right?  Social media can be effectively leveraged to ease that struggle.

Also from a family perspective, here’s a neat story from a sister unit: a company was in the field and there was a tornado warning, certainly a cause for concern for families.  They took a picture of the unit and uploaded it to their FB, in one instant letting nearly every family know that their loved one was safe.  Reaction/feedback was overwhelmingly positive!

Social media isn’t going anywhere, might as well figure out how to use it effectively!
