It’s something that I see constantly. Whether it’s dealing with promotions, or filling key positions. The organization no longer chooses the “best” to promote or fill much needed jobs… We chose “who’s available.” I literally heard a BDE CDR state, when asked about a certain person filling a certain position, “don’t give me any sh*t, he’s the only person we had.”

Is this how we pick personnel now, I guess. You said “promoted to their place of mediocrity…” I counter with this, leaders today are pushed to their place of mediocrity.

How can you effectively empower subordinates? Look them in the eye and tell them “you aren’t ready, this other officer who is junior to you, is being given the chance.” Instead, we shrug and fall back on “well, time and rank…”
