Definitely want to echo talking to your commander, time as a Platoon Leader (PL) is critical and you will learn a lot of leadership skills as well as some of the basics from your Platoon Sergeant (PSG).
As far as attending Battle Assemblies (USAR is moving away from ‘drilling’ as a term) ask about drilling quarterly; I’ve seen it done and when done properly it benefits both you and the unit: FTS can get more done with you in one shot; you have more time to work on projects/plans than trying to get everything done in less than 48 hours and you only have to pay for the flight once every quarter versus every month. Again; talk to your CDR first to make sure its doable.
One thing I’d recommend you to keep in the back of your mind is your evaluation.
Once you are BOLC qualified you’re going to be rated based on your performance and you don’t want a ‘met standards’ OER with weak bullets because you couldn’t be around. This is a good topic between your Commander and Rater (if two different people) and Senior Rater to set realistic expectations and goals in your initial counseling.
and congratulations on choosing OCS, I attended back in 2011 and it was one of the best times of my life!
