A few questions/ comments here…
(1) What are you trying to accomplish with your initial counseling? Personally, my initial counseling have evolved over time. My focus now is really to outline expectations in critical-areas, and how I envision the relationship structure. With this approach there is really no need to wait. The more you get bogged down in trying to “correct” perceived issues in your initial counseling, the less your reaching other goals (i.e. setting a perception that you’re on the ball, building rapport, etc).
(2) What is your plan for follow-up counselings (from a scheduling perspective)? If you’re looking at this from a timing standpoint, the longer you hold off on your initial counseling, the less time you have for follow on counselings. You’re already at a time disadvantage in the Reserves. Do you’re initial counselings and deliberately scheduling the follow on will keep you on track. Counseling is a perishable skill (and one that will evolve with time, experience, and structure development)! It doesn’t get better if you don’t exercise it.
One final tip…I see a lot of junior officers go all doom-and-gloom in their counselings. Keeping your counselings balanced, focused, and pertinent will help create an environment where they can become more productive in the future.
