Should you want to be “missed” from your organization after you leave?  Why or why not?

BLUF:  I’d like to be missed on both the personal and professional side, but I don’t want to be missed functionally.

Everybody wants to be liked, appreciated, and missed when they aren’t there (right?).  On the personal side, I’m no different.  I’d like to be missed due to my personal and professional relationships that I’ve sown, and of course due to my keen, and somewhat disturbing, sense of humor. However, as leader of an organization, I really don’t want to be missed in my “function” as a leader.  What I mean is that I hope that I’ve empowered and developed my subordinates (and perhaps peers) to the point where they know what to do in my absence and they have the confidence to do it as well.  If I were to leave and there was a huge knowledge and ability gap when I’ve left, I’ve done my team/unit a disservice.   I realize this is rather idealistic but it should also be our goal as a leader.  Making yourself indispensable doesn’t help anything, except perhaps one’s ego.
