This isn’t something I see on any products about readiness (e.g. brigade through corps level vision statements), but I think an important component to readiness is psychological/philosophical. By that I mean that our Soldiers understand that we really do exist to fight and potentially die in a war that could happen. As a platoon leader in an ABCT that has accepted the 9-month rotation, 18 months at home station rhythm as the norm, I see the absence of this and I believe it allows a lack of urgency to be acceptable. Everything from the importance of our OR rate to why having a will matters is harder to communicate (and understand myself) when there is not the urgency of a coming fight. This is probably an issue for any peacetime standing army, but not one that I’ve been exposed to any serious discussion of. Virtually all the Soldiers, junior NCOs, and LTs have never seen much of anything like a combat deployment. Being one of those green Lieutenants myself I’m not sure how to approach the problem.
