Who is the next person to leave in your organization?

I have to catch up in the book but I wanted to chime in on a relevant discussion that I’ll be bringing to the rendezvous. Our military and civilian physicians are leaving in droves. The Defense Health Agency has brought a lot of fear, anxiety, and changes to our healthcare system and a lot of people have decided that it’s not worth staying to get through the storm. I believe that part of the reason they are leaving is because they do not have an inspiration to stay. Often, our Primary Care Chiefs have had horrible attitudes towards the transition and they transfer this negativity to the staff. At Fort Carson, our Community Based Medical Homes have also been directed to close, and we are consolidating all clinics back into Evans. I have learned more about leadership in this job than I ever have (I assume this will keep happening as I progress in my career and am able to add more experience and context to my situations). I truly believe that this is all about messaging- if we were working harder to empower people to stay and help weather the storm together as a team, people would NOT be quitting this easily. A strong organizational commitment and a positive team culture are key to getting through difficult times together. Often, my facility has had the attitude of “get with the program or get out” and I really think it’s contributing to some hard times. The transition is coming, whether we like it or not.
