I don’t have an SOP, but I can share some TTPs.

I’ve had 4 SMP Cadets during my time in the Guard, and each situation was unique based on what year they were and where we were at in the (at the time) ARFORGEN cycle.

I have always assigned the Cadets into an HQ PL role, but at the same time I tried getting them exposed to as many leadership functions as possible.  Due to schools and fills, I always had key NCO positions that needed to be filled, so I would place Cadets in team leader positions, including in the weapons team, squad leader, and platoon leader.  We made having the Cadet a position of pride for whichever element I placed them in, and in doing so those teams, squads, and platoons competed to keep them, and subsequently the Cadets received exceptional mentorship from the Soldiers and NCOs alike.  I never made the Cadet an “assistant” PL; if the PL was present for the drill weekend, the PL led.

Working around the ROTC schedule was not too much of a challenge, as it was understood that there were some competing weekends.  If my XO and I needed to meet mid month for training planning, we would meet near the Cadet(s), sometimes on campus (New Jersey is small enough that this is relatively easy), and do a planning session around the Cadet’s time.  Training management seems to be a lost and not taught art, so I considered it important enough to make sure they were included and that we didn’t finger drill it.

Unfortunately I saw too many other units that considered a Cadet as a sub-private.  You give them room to spread their wings and get the unit to rally around training a new officer, and you can be surprised at how much they can accomplish.
