We never had an “SOP,” but I used common sense factor TTPs as well previous military experience, to decide on how to develop them further.

Year 1/2 SMPs with no/little military experience; I would attach them to a team leader and then squad leader. Let them learn the ropes at the team and squad levels and see down and dirty, tactical level leadership, as well as to see up close and personal “JOE” and everything that can mean.

Year 3s would go with the PSG.

Year 4s got attached to the XO, Motor SGT, and Supply SGT on a rotational basis.

Then on top of this, they would assist the PLs with planning ranges, training, and classes. I would of course throw in my own OPD sessions.
