As an M-day myself I agree its a huge commitment.  I considered it a second full time job.  For me, I found it useful to give my full time support staff guidelines.  They were very clear on my intent and my left and right limits as a commander.  For those moments I was off the net they were empowered to act.  I expected an update but being a guard officer and leader requires an ability to delegate.

My concern was that unlike our active brethren, we also have to deal with unemployed and even homeless soldiers.  How do you push a soldier to do SSD when they are worried about not having money enough to eat this month.  What about the soldier who is bouncing from living room couch to living room couch.  Gone are the days when you could put them on orders at the Armory to meet some GWOT tasking.
