    Wilton,

I commissioned via ROTC, and was assigned to JBLM, WA as a PL in 3/2 (now 1/2) SBCT. JBLM is an absolutely outstanding duty station, for the units that are there, and for the surrounding area. It was luck of the draw, and I think it was inexperience, as much as a sense of selflessness that caused me to trust in the Army to make the decision.

Regardless, I believed then and I believe now that a leader should be able to go anywhere. No matter where it is, they can find a way to make the most out of it, enjoy it, and more importantly to make the location and organization better. That is a tall order, of course, especially with certain locations. If nothing else that officer can look forward to leaving within 3 years.

You should have the option to choose and receive your first duty station, via the additional duty service obligation (ADSO) process. However, consider the trade-offs and what your goals are. Additional service years of service is a high price to pay for a place you may only be at for 1-2 years.
