I had a good number of these while in command.

For me, one of the biggest focal points was on treating the troops stuck in the middle of these personal problems more as people and less as troops in a very private, pressure-free setting.

I should note I always pushed the message of preventive action by NCOs.  Our NCOs, whether at PLT or Company level, are First Line Leaders and MUCH closer to the Soldier than we are as officers.  They should be the one to spot these problems (or their effects on the Soldier’s work performance) and begin counseling to mitigate the problems and provide support to the troop.  To that end, if it reached your level without NCO intervention, you have to handle the Soldier’s issues and the challenge of educating your NCOs.

As noted above, there are tons of services available on any given post.  If you’re at PLT level, you may not be informed of these.  If you’re ever unsure, check with your commander, as most company commanders receive a brief of all services available on their post as part of the Commander’s and First Sergeant’s Course.  Not all posts have one of these, mind you.  Failing that, as Chad noted, you can check with the Chaplain, MFLC, or even BN Physician’s Assistant, sometimes.  The point is to ask questions here when you’re not sure how to proceed.

Finally, ensure that your NCOs counsel.  Ensure that you also counsel.  I made a habit, both as a PL and Commander, to prepare basic counseling forms for common issues and pen in the details during our talks.  Soldiers often see counseling forms as negative, but if you open by letting them know it’s a neutral counseling that will help you provide them the best support you can, they’ll usually be cool with it.  Counseling each time you talk to a Soldier in situations like this will build a pattern of behavior if things ever get out of control or will provide evidence for personal improvement by the Soldier, which can be cause for commendation.  If nothing else, it covers the bases and informs future leaders.
