Emotional intelligence is key to interpersonal relationships. Don’t be too distant, but don’t be a buddy. If you stay mission-focused you’ll be okay, NCOs will be there to take care of Soldiers. Remember, you’ll often hear complaints- “we can’t do this!” Meanwhile you are judged on your ability to accomplish things, not push back. Units are often busy, chaotic places of high op-tempo, so when people vent and complain, you the officer should reassure and encourage them; don’t add your voice to the chorus, you’ll be just another Joe.

as a 2LT, my NCOs would say – “sir, this truck can’t lift that,” and then I looked it up in the TM, and answered: “actually, it can…” so its a balance as you build trust. Remember, they owe you as much as you do them, its a two-way street. Be kind, respectful and look into tenets of emotional intelligence now, but be the honest-broker, that is your number one priority; loyalty not just to each other but to the Army and American people.  Trust but verify.
