I think Brock and Scott are spot on, and to better help answer your question; what branch are your or do you know what you will most likely be branched based on availability/ranking?

Expectations may differ based on branch.  For example, I arrived to my battalion as an Infantry officer and was immediately assigned to a platoon.  Those officers of the same branch that arrived with me had the same happen, minus those that served on staff prior to going to a company.  In contrast, an AG/CM officer may arrive to a brigade and remain at that level for over a year before going to a battalion if they are lucky.

Regarding actual work at an organization; this could very based on the needs of the organization and the focus.  Arriving to a unit just prior to a rotation to the National or Joint Readiness Training Centers will differ from arriving to a unit that just returned from Iraq.

Again, it would help to know what you are interested/will be doing upon commissioning.
