@jsnow2 , you asked what is being done at the unit level in FORSCOM. Here’s what I’m doing in my unit. As the Squadron S1, I reviewed the DEPSECDEF’s memo that goes over the whole transition (available via S1Net on MilSuite), then sent a task out via the weekly tasking order that Soldiers have until 1 November to do the training (yes, I know, the Army didn’t technically put an end date on the training, but there’s goodness in not broadcasting that). I phrased the tasking so that tracking of completion takes place at the company-level; this should prompt company-level internal discussions on if you’ve done the training / how you see it / what your struggling with, and that should prompt platoon-level leaders to then get involved with their Soldiers with these and more questions. In a FORSCOM unit, it is easy to dismiss a long-term task in place of the current knife fight in the phone booth, so I have a few deliberate and continuous steps I’ll be taking to continue to help the company-level. Continuing with my Squadron-level role, I’m going to continue to push out information (probably via Command and Staff briefs for educational purposes), and then doubling down on the face-to-face contact with my troops and Commanders/1SGs, maybe even preaching the good word to Soldiers who find themselves in the S1 shop. I’ll probably also put out the tasking via S3 on a monthly or so basis, just to keep reminding people of the relevancy of the task.
As the S1, I care most about if leaders (and therefore Soldiers) know where to go for training; that the training is meant to set them for a successful decision and is not ‘just another mandatory training thing to do’; that they need to put deliberate time, thought, and family discussions into the decision; and that this is a deliberate decision that you and only you then validate via a digital signature in MyPay (available 1 Jan 2018); and that this decision is irrevocable.
So that’s how I’m trying to make a positive difference. But let me turn the question on you: what actions do you think a unit should take? Let me know what else I can do in my unit!
Here’s the BRS At a Glance flyer that I’ve been posting around my unit:
