@cptchristopherprice, Great topic and absolutely relevant. Morale is one of those combat multipliers that leaders, especially in the Guard and Reserves, overlook because they are so slammed with the avalanche of tasks and suspense items that inevitably make up every drill. Morale matters even more when going into a mobilization. What I did preceding and then going into my last mobilization was develop a patch that I could give to my Soldiers when they did something outstanding, something they could wear on their field gear or back packs. I also hosted a platoon dinner, where everyone got together in a relaxed environment and could get to know each other over a couple of adult beverages.
The other thing that builds morale is leaders showing they care and not being afraid of telling them exactly how it is. Don’t candy coat stuff. When you tell Soldiers the good and the bad, when they know you’re on the level, their morale is high even when bad news hits.
