“The Mission, The Men, and Me” by Pete Blaber and “The Heart and the Fist” by Eric Greitens.  Reason for these recommendations is that sometimes pure “war” novels or business management books either skew perception or have left some of my junior officers confused between management expectations…these books seem to blend the warrior mentality and expected outcomes of ethical and moral leader behaviors that show purpose beyond the uniform as well.

“What it is Like to Go to War” by Karl Marlantas is a good primer on the effects combat can have on a person, and may provide insight on mitigation and means of post-traumatic growth.

From a business perspective, looking at some of the recommendations above, I would add “The Fifth Discipline” by Peter Senge to introduce a little systems theory and group management towards problem solving (great for when you are assigned to staff), along with “Sway” by Ori and Rom Brafman, and “Smart Choices: A Practical Guide to Making Better Decisions” by Hammond, Keeney, and Raiffa.
