Responsibilities would include informing all of DOD and local policies formally (even make it part of the onboarding process), and actively enforcing the policy as every other. Due to host nation sensitivities to posting, geotagging, and content, I would check common hashtags and pull the Soldier in when there were violations of the policy. Some received a warning (all just gym selfies with geotagging on, etc), and some received Art 15s (violation of opsec, out of regulation civilian clothes pictures while on liberty). All learned how to lock down their profiles so it wasn’t publicly discoverable. Not to say that shenanigans didn’t continue, but I hope that the in person counseling led to an understanding of what was important about how to use social media.

Properly using social media as a leader as an example for others is also key. My internal company and FRG page as a commander resulted in a very broad member base and use. I’ve never turned down a friend request from a former Soldier, nor from my senior leaders in my formation, just never allowed current Soldiers to friend me on personal media, though always on my LinkedIn.

The TL;DR is that I’ve never acted as the morals police to drive their content, however I have set the example and trusted until it’s time not to trust. Trying to regulate thought and behavior on what people consider private starts a downward spiral of climate that would be counterproductive to the trust necessary to keep this from happening.
