2.) The Domain of Army Leadership Development incorporates the development of emotional intelligence within all stages. Emotional intelligence, can be seen through five stages, self awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. The ability to develop ones self into a great leader through the institutional, self- development and operational domains directly relies on the understanding of attributes. Who you are; Character, presence and intellect along with competencies, what the army expects you do, Lead, Develop and achieve. The process of  Leadership has constantly been defined, re-defined and characterized by the Army. Something important here is how we perceive the flexibility of leadership as a process that can be learned, monitored and improved. With the institutional level along with self-awareness ( self-confidence) and emotional intelligence one learns about the different leadership roles and the exact definition of leadership ” The process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” (ADP 6-22).  In order to further their influence and provide that purpose, social skills seen through effectiveness in leading change and motivation or a strong drive to achieve need to be operationalized through the operational domain and training. With training, self-regulation, empathy, inter-personal and intra-personal skills the art of leadership can become engrained and second nature, and with social skills one can convey their leadership expectations, thus operationalizing leadership. On the other hand, the Army is constantly changing the development of leadership, the definition and what it means to be a leader. In order to stay up to speed with the developing leadership, there has to exist a self development domain. As stated in Leadership development strategies “self development bridges the learning gaps between the institutional and operational domains, and sets conditions for continuous learning and growth” (MLDS 3-13) This domain along with emotional intelligence, and comfort of ambiguity (change) helps keep leaders in the present through refining and developing their leadership further by means of structured self-development (SSD) courses. These courses are imperative for the development of a leader, and understanding their leadership capabilities from both the NCO perspective and Officers. Through further analysis into development of leadership and success as a leader emotional intelligence is directly correlated to success. As a result, the Army should put more focus in this area. By the Army enforcing further Development of emotional intelligence into professional military education leaders will have the ability to become better, more influential leaders. Ultimately leading to a more professional Army.
