As it is such an important part of leadership, it makes sense that it is incorporated. While emotional intelligence can one way or another fit into any part of the leader model, it most easily fits into the two attributes of character and intellect. In terms of character, emotional intelligence has the most to do with empathy. Empathy is all about understanding and being able to relate to others emotions and feelings. Emotional intelligence is essentially the same thing. It is all about knowing how people operate, and whether we like it or not, the driving force behind nearly every person’s actions are their emotions. Being able to understand what drives people is extremely important to leadership. It allows us to motivate people and get the most out of them. It is also important to understand our own emotions. This is where emotional intelligence fits into intellect. Interpersonal tact is, in layman’s terms, people skills. This is the ability to interact with and understand how people communicate both verbally and non-verbally. Being able to pick up on the ques in a conversation can help to understand how someone is feeling or what they are thinking. Again, this is a very important part of being able to lead others and learn what motivates them so that you can get the most out of them. Emotional intelligence is something that is not very easy to quantify. However, it is something that you can see if someone has it or not. It is very easy to know when someone has empathy when interacting with them. The same is for interpersonal tact, or people skills. It is very easy to know when someone doesn’t know how to interact with people or simply just doesn’t like to. Overall, emotional intelligence is the ability to understand people and what drives them. It is critical to possess this skill when leading people and trying to get the most out of them.
