I believe that the Army’s Leadership Requirement Model does account for emotional intelligence and that it fits into the actual direct leadership within the model. By actively leading soldiers and figuring out exactly how best to lead them. And to understand how best to lead them an officer must understand how his or her soldiers react to certain situations/pressures/difficulties.
Emotional intelligence occurs mainly within the self-development domain of the ALD, as understanding ones soldiers comes from experience and effort on the side of the officer.
Experience as a Cadet
I would say that my experience as a cadet has had some very limited effected on my emotional intelligence. The main reason for the limited effect I is that I’ve simply never even thought about emotional intelligence before class this semester, that doesn’t meant I don’t notice how people react to things however I also have never tried to pay a great deal of attention to those reactions either. Whether or not actively thinking about emotional intelligence would have aided me in improving is up for debate (I myself would guess that it wouldn’t help much), but I do believe putting forth what seems to be almost an excessive amount of thought towards the topic of emotional intelligence would be immensely helpful in at the least understanding fellow soldiers. This is especially the case for people like me who are somewhat lacking in emotional intelligence, which harms communication in general, making many of the tasks in ROTC more difficult than they need to be.
