I agree with some of the other contributors who mention the need to model proper behavior. We need to be weary of the idea that we (leaders) can chose to not participate or ignore social media and just avoid the problem all together.

Although not everyone will be interested, I personally share my opinions on how to use social media as a professional learning network, and then I contribute to communities of like minded people in such a manner. In addition, I try to engage subordinates, peers, or superiors by tagging them in discussions that I think they might be interested in. I’ve found this is most effective on Twitter where you can use hashtags quite effectively, but there are some who shape their Facebook feeds in a similar manner.
