A good company commander will ensure you’re trained first before he or she allows you to sign for property.  It’s in everyone’s best interest that you know what you’re doing.  You can also request to accompany the CDR during his/her cyclic inventories (typically a 10% inventory of the entire property book conducted monthly).  You can request the supply sergeant teach you about end items, components, basic issue items, types of property, GCSS-Army, how to read hand receipts, how to pull reports in excel so you can easily manipulate them and add personal notes. During inventories, pull out that smartphone, take pictures and catalog them. And when in doubt, ask questions.
