Fact: Every evaluation and counseling form is a legal document that can be used against any well-intentioned, regulation-informed leader. Some soldiers don’t like being held accountable and they will make every effort to impede the process. Issue all counseling IAW JAG guidelines (no more, no less); if your unit has no JAG guidance/SOP, personally engage JAG prior to issuing any performance counseling or negative evaluations. Become more familiar with IG policies and protections than any other Soldier/Officer in your command. This knowledge will make you a better officer and better performance manager.
