Sounds like you have lots of experience and developed a fair and thorough method for adjudicating each case.
I participated in a discussion recently where leaders were weighing the benefits of applying standards and processes in a prescriptive manner vice taking each individual case and varying conditions as discrete events. In the former approach, a commander can reinforce the organizational system of justice with predictability ie “zero tolerance”, but risks “hitting every action with a flat bat”. Weighing each individual case is critical and required but widely varying outcomes can also be perceived as erratic and risks favoritism or preference if not meticulously and consistently articulated since all cases will likely be compared over time…ie SGT X got demoted for DUI while SGT Y’s punishment was suspended. Unit level discipline requires a delicate balance between the two approaches.
I can’t say that I’ve enjoyed any part of the UCMJ process, but I certainly respect it and value the wisdom and advice of those with experience. Thanks so much for sharing yours!!
