I’ve had the privilege of working in great maneuver units as well as sustainment focused units. Unless you’ve been “inside” those ranks it’s hard to see the difference in cultures and personalities. If you’re a leader, you can lead in any organization but you better understand the people you’re leading. Strong leaders, no matter the profession, know what they need to do to bring the best out of their people. No two leaders are the same and many personalities have been successful in the military. We focus way to much on the style of communication however and less on the heart of the leader. If your soldiers believe in you and know you care, you can push them, be hard on them them and expect tremendous results. The “words” you use are far less important than the message you’re trying to convey. I have no issue with an senior NCO giving a junior NCO or soldier and intense version of corrective training, as long as the point gets across and the behavior isn’t repeated. If your troops respect you, which as a leader you earn, then you will get results, no matter your style.
