    A couple things I do/have done:

Visit posts at off hours to have time to just talk to my Soldiers, and do same with my attachments.

Buy ice cream and take it to posts (always bring enough for the local nationals, though!!!)

Develop competitions at the individual/team/squad/platoon level and purchase some unit and individual awards to go along with them.  The trophy may move from team to team, but the team members get something.

I order custom stationery with the deployment/command name and location on them and hand write a note to every Soldier, Sailor, and Marine I lead (haven’t led any zoomies yet…).  This has to be the hardest of the bunch.  I take notes after many engagements with those I lead, writing about what they say about family, school, career, dreams, whatever, and use that in my note to them.  To be honest, a few notes become “thanks for showing up”, but some may be 2-3 pages long and consume a significant amount of time and mental energy.  Writing 200+ notes is tough, but leading a unit from an inner city location I’ve seen many instances where this is the first direct and real feedback some have ever received.

Support for the spouses and family members in my FRG goes a long way, as well.  I used to get up at 3 AM and Skype in to FRG meetings.  Soldiers would hear from family members about what I was telling them back home, especially when I brought up the good work they were doing.  I could have said “Snuffy, you’re doing a great job” and may have been considered patronizing, but when Snuffy’s mom emails him and says how proud she was that CPT Moore told her how great he was doing, it is a completely different level of pride.
