Along these lines, I’m dealing with this very situation right now.

I was tasked with a high level security mission (guarding an aircraft for a high level government official that may or may not rhyme with VPOTUS), with 24 hours notice, and needed 15 personnel; 1 officer, 1 SSG or above, and 13 PVT-SGT.

I got 3 volunteers. One of those was AGR (who technically I can just order to do the mission).

My BC was furious and wanted to know why I couldn’t get 15 people, out of a company of over 200. I told him that it’s a 3 day weekend, we’re asking for volunteers on a Friday evening, and that the Soldiers of the company have been jerked around so much and so often, being paid the bare minimum possible (RMA which is only a single day of base pay; where Soldiers could be paid a single day of base, BAH, and BAS). They don’t care that this is for the VPOTUS, and don’t care that it’s important to the BC. I told the BC bluntly that I inherited a company culture of “IDGAF” and need more time to fix it (though it’s been 5 months, I’ve only had 3 drills as commander). The Soldiers will come to drill; the Soldiers will respond to an emergency call up; but for ankle biter missions that pop up, they don’t want anything to do with them when they feel they aren’t appreciated and or compensated.

Any other Guard/USAR leaders experience anything similar? Looking for thoughts and ideas going forward. I have a couple, but would like to hear others.
