I think professional reading is integral to self development for many reasons, but above all I think the introspective nature of reading has many benefits in gaining perspective and self development. As we discussed in class the very act of reading and writing requires a more intense focus of the brain and develops a greater synthesis of knowledge. It has been proven that in listening to radio or watching videos humans are more likely to take that information as truth. Conversely reading and writing are found to produce greater reflection.

Moreover, as leaders expected to guide many soldiers in changing situations and environments, professional reading is an important way to expose yourself to different perspectives. While you may not always agree with the perspective of the author, introduction to other ways of thinking enhances the breadth of your knowledge and refines your own opinions.

While there are many benefits of professional reading in addition to those stated above, people are different types of learners and reading may not be the ideal way for certain individuals to retain information. However, with the various forms of media today ie. podcasts, ted talks, I think it is important officers make a concerted effort to broaden their perspectives in some way. Whether it is reading a book a week or listening to a podcast a month, I think the disciplined act of creating time to self develop and refine your perspectives will be beneficial for officers both as leaders and people.
