Thank you for your response! I guess my logic for capable versus unsat is due to the 2LT not doing anything illegal, unethical, immoral, or unsafe…he just struggled with mission accomplishment and leader attributes. I have most of his performance documented, and even more one on one verbal counseling’s to back up my claim: this 2LT is not the right first for the company and needs a fresh start.

I have dialogued this with his senior rater, and we both agreed that he needs to leave the Battalion.

If he doesn’t learn from this experience, then the next commander will have nothing but documentation to merit an unsat rating and retire this leader to civilian life.

It easily could have been my leadership style that didn’t bode well for him, however only a fresh start will determine.
