This is widely position and rank dependent in my opinion – a PL and a Staff Primary and a Commander will have widely different experiences and required preparations. I always try to remind myself of what is the Right way of doing business (doctrine, regulation) vs. the SOP (the way We do things in the unit, office, Bde, etc.), and start to mentally split the two apart. I think that shows proficiency more versus just habits or practice. After a certain amount of preparation, I think there’s a point you just have to brace for impact. That doesn’t mean walking on eggshells, I think you navigate your day in the same way but when you experience some unexpected turbulence, just take it, acknowledge it, respond (not react) to it, and then drive on with a slight change in direction.
