    At this point in the war, the soldiers were probably losing faith in their leadership. At the beginning of the section 5 morale has at its highest, but as the war lengthened and winter set in many began to question the motives of their leadership. Fighting battles that did not show immediate results was disheartening and most of the times it was the platoon and company leaders that kept soldiers in the fight. The main issue was the disconnect many felt from the upper echelons. Many soldiers believed their overall leadership was competent but not interested in the well-being of the individual. This caused some to outright refuse to fight, but overall the actions of the local leadership kept what little faith the soldier had to remain.
