The shared geographic nature of their service was extremely moving and also practical. The Glousters’ sense of history and to serve their country with their neighbors directly impacted their performance on the field. They had a personal connection with each other for years, both before and after their military service. The unit was an extension of the community and vice-versa. As a result of trying to weaken the military against internal coups and the states, we have alienated ourselves from our shared history. More importantly, the lack of regional based military units has alienated military service from civilian society. At least half the population in their urban ivory towers deride military service as stupid, unnecessary, and barbarous. A victim of our own success, they remain completely ignorant to the sacrifices required to keep this country free. Not to mention the hard facts of human existence.
