Eric,
My condolences for your situation. My first question would be do you have access to any sort of historical products that the previous S-2/AS-2 had previously used to brief the BN CDR and Staff? While those products may necessarily no longer be relevant, they could establish a small baseline that you can build upon, certainly much better than from scratch. Share-drives, share portals, old Command & Staff briefs and the like are places I always combed through to see what previous S-2s and other S-2s were presenting to their Commanders and to see if there was anything I could incorporate into what my shop was doing.
Next, I would also urge you to seek the counsel of the XO; as the BN’s Chief of Staff he has the responsibility to teach, coach, and mentor you. If you come to him with any of the previously discovered products you might’ve discovered, he should be able to give you insights on what is still useful or what may need to be added to suit the Commander’s needs.
Overall, I would say that intelligence support to Aviation is, at its core, just like intelligence support to everything else: The Commander’s Priority Intelligence Requirements will drive everything for you. The advantage you’ll have is that you’ll have a keen eye for stuff that would’ve been useful to you as a PL and be able to shape what you present based on that. As for the soldiers, Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (and its sub-steps) is where they live. I know they are not current doctrine, but FM 2-01.3 and FMI 2-01.301 will forever be my favorite IPB references. Also, if you’re interested, I have an analyst training program of my own design from my time as a PL in the MI Company that could be of use to you. Reach out to me at markandrew.s.gnodle.mil@mail.mil if you’d like.
Hope anything I’ve said helps you in your endeavors!
