Armor BOLC is split into three phases: Classroom OPORDs/Doctrine, Platform, and Field.
During the OPORD phase you have lots of classes going through tactics and doctrine to prepare you for your four operations orders. The platform phase is when you are physically on the Tanks and Bradleys learning about their capabilities, maintenance, and gunnery skills tasks. Field phase is when you spend 4×1 week periods actually conducting operations with your platoon.
I went to BOLC in July 2016 so not sure how much it has changed since then. I would say arrive as physically fit as possible (especially if you are going to an IBCT or SBCT as you will have to go to Ranger School), work on peer leadership and how you fit into the team, and figure out how you learn and retain information. I lived on post and absolutely loved it but I know some people who lived at IP or off exit 10 that liked it too. You spend a lot of time at the school so living within 15 minutes is preferable. You do PT in the morning and classes usually go from 1700-1800 at night, not including homework. All in all it’s a great course that prepares you a lot for being a platoon leader. Also it is a requirement but ensure you get ARC afterward, probably the best and most beneficial course I’ve taken in the Army. I’m currently a Tank PL at Fort Hood in 1st CAV, let me know if you have any follow up questions!
