In regards to the lack of discipline, there is not a standard or clear delineation of expectations JOs should have in regard to their unit. What is well disciplined to one is lacking to another. There needs to be a clear discussion upon arrival to the unit from the commander on what he wants to see. Many times this is assumed or not enforced until someone breaks a larger rule; then smaller, undeclared rules are enforced.

Furthermore, there is a clear link between ethics and discipline yet our ethics classes are limited and infrequent. Instead, there are too many classes on sexual assault, responsible drinking, and the like. If this time was taken up by a syllabus of ethics and morals classes you would not have to tell soldiers to stop sexually assaulting or to drink responsibly because all of their actions would become more ethical. Treat the disease of poor moral guidance and not the symptoms of bad behavior.
