Concur with what Jason Smith said. Especially regarding the meetings. When a unit plans their exercises, operations, training, etc., they often do not plan well for the communication bit of it. They simply expect it to be there appropriately. As a BN S6, if you are not proactive in these planning events, you will find yourself jumping through hoops to provide communication support at the last minute.

Also, know your unit and its mission. Know how what you’re doing within the BN affects/relates to the higher (BDE, etc.), and how you can more effectively plug into that relationship. As the BN S6, you are the senior communications expert for your BN Commander and the more you can show him/her how their organization can support their higher’s mission, the more confidence the commander/organization will have in what you’re trying to accomplish. This equates to more flexibility for you to accomplish goals you have for your section/shop/Soldiers (I.E. communication specific training, certifications, schools, etc.).

Support your fellow staff officers. It is almost a symbiotic relationship within the BN Staff and the more you support them, the more they will support you.

Be willing to learn and actively look for opportunities to do so. Just because you’re the LT/CPT/S6, does not mean you know it all. Learn from the WOs/NCOs/Soldiers, they’re trained and experienced in their specific area. Actively take an interest in what your signal Soldiers are doing and how they do it. Provide them your vision, your guidance and direction, then let them show you what they do.

    Lastly, stay flexible.

    Hope this helps some.
