I agree with all the above posts that provide great insight. I’d like to expound on some from an HHC CDR perspective.

    1. Engage in continuous learning. Whether day 1 or day 365, ensure you have a mechanism to constantly assess yourself and the S6 team. You’ll receive direct feedback from the XO and BN CDR but you can also seek feedback from the horizontal relationships across the BN.

    2. Develop a training plan for your team. Think long-term and think of alternates. This goes back to knowing your personnel and actively seeking technical training for them. Prioritization is key since your HHC CDR may want to send them to non-MOS related schools which may benefit them. However, ensure you are balancing the mission, the gains/losses and capabilities of your shop. What training can the BDE S6 provide? What schools are nearby? What training does your BN need that your team can provide and enhance? The more competent your team is, the better you can integrate what you bring to the fight.

    3. Establish an environment that minimizes trivial tasks. Many  issues will arise from user errors. From not completing IA training to someone forgetting to reset their password, BNS6 is often blamed for any computer issues. In a previous unit, the BNS6 had a sharepoint with several “how-tos” for various trivial tasks. By posting this information and making it readily available, the BN S6 shop freed itself from many small tasks placing the responsibility. Think of how you can streamline processes for your team and the BN.

    Good luck and Best Regards,
    George
