Are LT McDonough’s actions contrary to what we are typically told about moving slowly when entering a new leadership position? Do you agree with his approach or think he should have conducted himself differently?
Yes I would say they are but I do agree with his approach given the circumstances. The previous LT Rolfe wasn’t involved with his troops and led them to be highly undisciplined. Essentially it was up to a select few in the PLT to act in his stead when they shouldn’t have had to bear that responsibility. McDonough was forced to act quicker then normal instilling clear SOPs and other guidelines. They were at war; men were going into battle outside the line and these changes I believe were necessary to help save their lives and make them more effective in combat. To wait would’ve been a disservice and cost life & limb.
In Chapter 7 LT McDonough writes, “The challenge to overcome personal fear is one of the more seductive sirens. It is a deeply internalized struggle. Fear itself is not shameful. In fact, the absence of fear in the face of combat would be a suspicious abnormality of character. The challenge lies in not denying fear, but in being able to function in the face of it.” Does LT McDonough overcome his fear? Can these fears ever be overcome? Is this something future leaders can prepare for? If yes, how?
He is still fearful he just is able to adapt to accommodate it. I believe the fear doesn’t go away for certain things (especially that) but being able to act rationally and well under such stress is the true sign of a leader. Future leaders can try to prepare by undergoing situations that are high stress/fear – essentially more combat training.
