I do believe that military leaders must weigh their decisions carefully. Often times when military leaders make decisions they are putting their soldiers into harms way. This means that they must account for as many threats as possible. Moreover, military decisions also have the ability to either help or harm relations with the local populace. For example, the entire hearts and minds campaign in Afghanistan is based off of the Afghan people trusting coalition forces to help them. If, during an operation, there is collateral damage the populace’s trust in coalition forces will only deteriorate. This can also lead to more issues down the road such as civilians aiding the enemy or being more stubborn during negotiations. Just think about the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. This means that, as a future Army officer, it is going to be my responsibility to make the best decisions I can whilst using as many resources I can to accomplish the mission. Furthermore, my decisions must be adaptable. While carrying out a mission, that mission must be flexible when something goes wrong. The mission must also create less problems rather than more problems if you consider the hearts and minds campaign. It basically boils down to me making decisions that are best for my soldiers, the mission, and the bigger picture.
