I personally believe that LT McDonough handles situations where he hast to resolve a conflict between himself and a soldier as well as I could expect anyone in that high stress environment that Vietnam was to react. While I would like to say that I would be able to act with a cooler head in regard to the exchange between LT McDonough and PFC King I have not been in an environment that even remotely resembles what it is like in war let alone the seemingly incredibly high stress situation that LT McDonough and his platoon was in. I believe that this extra stress of the environment caused the violent reaction of pressing his weapon up against the chin of PFC King. In a war zone situation I believe that this was an appropriate response as order needed to immediately be restored. The necessity to restore order coupled with the severity of the offense of discharging a grenade at LT McDonough made the response in my opinion very appropriate. The fact that LT McDonough was able to keep his cool and did not retaliate with a more permanent solution to the insubordination of PFC King allowed him to show the severity of the action , restore order, and avoid a major morale problem if he had lost his temper and done something drastic. I have not been in a high pressure situation like Vietnam and cannot grasp how that must wear on your nerves so I believe that given all of the different factors of the situation that occurred that it was an effective solution to the conflict between LT McDonough and PFC King.
