The thing that stuck out to me the most during the attack was Lt. McDonough’s command and control over the entirety of the situation. Effectively focusing fire and moving his men around the Patrol Base to stop attackers while also dealing with wounded, civilians, and eventually, coordinating friendly forces. As for bringing all available resources, I think there were resources within his immediate vicinity and then those supplied by further help. For example, during the fight, he used flares and controlled tracer rounds to direct fire and illuminate the ground to see the enemies. He was able to consistently supply his platoon with ammunition with help from his PSG. He then used effective communication with his Battalion S3 to receive illuminated mortar rounds and indirect fire help. Friendly aviation and armored units followed some time later and sealed the fight. He was able to use every resource at his disposal, both within his wire and from afar. While working with the Cobra gunships, I think he had a questionable but solid decision to make. I was most impressed with his quick reasoning and judgment of the situation. He knew it was the wrong thing to do to let the helicopters mow down the village. He knew it was his decision to make, regardless of the demeanor or rank of the pilots above, and he quickly made the right decisions. He stayed cool and collected during the heat of the moment and that is what I find most impressive.
