In chapter sixteen, LT. McDonough’s statements regarding war and his tactics are typical. Although I have never been in combat, I believe that in any war there are issues that arise where leadership has to go against their morals and beliefs to make the most practical decisions to keep people alive. When LT. McDonough threatened to kill the farmer; he did so to get through a hill that was heavily mined to save a soldier that was hit in the leg and was bleeding out. There is a saying that I believe to be true, “All is fair in love and war.” No matter how many rules there are placed, war is war and it is ugly, and I genuinely believe it is meant to be that way. Westernized countries believe in a set of rules to play by in war, but many other countries do not. People will do horrendous things to stay alive, and therefore there are some times that leadership should go against the grain on their moral compass a little to do what is most practical within reason of course!
